Artist's Vision

There is constant movement in every aspect of life. Even when at rest, the cells of the body are working vigorously: atoms are spinning, blood is flowing, and neurons are firing – all to keep the body running from its inevitable shut down. Years of evolution have allowed for organisms of all shapes and sizes to thrive in their own unique ways, ultimately creating a fragile web in which every creature relies on many others for survival.
Humans have advanced above all other species. We have evolved to perceive the world around us and to ask questions regarding our own bodies and minds. We are able to understand that the body will one day die and that we can build tools to increase longevity. Interactions between our tools and the natural environment can widely benefit our advancements as a race, but our adaptive nature is also a danger we must face every day. The environment cannot keep up with our creative minds - it is our duty to clean up the waste we have created, especially waste that cannot be degraded by nature at all. The braided network of the environment requires every organism to play an essential role in maintaining and coexisting with all other life in order to survive. Yet, our fellow organisms are dying, and the network is becoming frail. We are losing the fight towards survival - how will humans handle the collapse that will come?

As a scientific artist and a microbiologist, I feel this topic is of utmost importance with my increasing awareness of our dying world. It is my duty to use my knowledge of art and biology to emphasize current world problems and bring awareness to the beauty of life around us. By creating humorous, colorful and informative pieces, I hope to spark the public's fascination in nature and guide them into a life that revolves around protecting the fragile earth that we live on.
